Sergey Sirotkin took his first win of the 2016 GP2 season on Sunday, with victory in the Sprint race at the Hungaroring.
The ART driver pulled a daring move on reverse grid pole man Jordan King on lap 5, just after a Safety Car restart for a multi-car incident on lap 1.
The crash in question included four cars, all of whom were eliminated at the second corner in a melee triggered by Arthur Pic. The Frenchman spun his Rapax car right in the path of Alex Lynn, and the pair were eliminated on the spot.
Nobuharu Matsushita and Luca Ghiotto got caught up in the incident as well, and the carnage took four long laps to be cleared.
It was after this that Sirotkin and King went wheel-to-wheel through the first three corners of the lap, before King made a mistake at turn 3, giving Sirotkin the optimal line for turn 4 at the top of the hill.
He scythed past on the inside, making it Sirotkin's chance to control the race, and that he did, maintaining a gap to King.
The Russian has had a dry spell since his maiden victory in last year's Silverstone Feature race, but after a trying first few races of 2016, he has now recovered some lost ground.
Fellow Russian Artem Markelov also featured well, chasing Norman Nato for the final podium step.
He would run out of laps, however, and the top three of Sirotkin, King and Nato finished as they were, trailed by Markelov, Mitch Evans, Oliver Rowland, fastest la–setter Pierre Gasly, and Raffaele Marciello.
