To train his neck for the immense G-forces exerted when cornering, Nico Rosberg will spend hours in the ‘Torture Chamber’ lifting weights with his head in order to strengthen his neck muscles.
Formula 1 drivers can experience forces of around 3G on average for several seconds during a high-speed corner, several times a lap, hundreds of times a race and thousands of times a race weekend.
However, some of the harshest corners can reach up to 5G, that’s five times the force of gravity pushing on an F1 drivers body.
If they didn’t train their neck muscles, then it’s likely after a handful of laps they wouldn’t be able to drive the car at all due to fatigue.
