Sebastian Vettel says he’s fully aware that his new team, Ferrari, won’t be challenging Mercedes for race wins in 2015 after admitting a return to form for the Italian marque will take time.
He is however confident success will come eventually, though admits the move from Red Bull is a massive risk.
“I am not fooling myself that we will be able to take on Mercedes next year,” he told Germany’s Die Welt.
“I am very aware that we at Ferrari have a big job coming up that will take time – especially when Mercedes has such a huge competitive advantage.”
His decision to switch was well considered and one the four-time champion says he wouldn’t have made if he didn’t believe he could add to his title tally.
“Every change is a step into the unknown and therefore a risk. But I thought a lot about this decision before taking it,” he explained.
“If I was not convinced that I can be successful there, I would not be doing it.
“At first, I just want to prove that it was the right decision – for Ferrari and for me. That will take some time.”
