The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) has written to the FIA threatening to boycott the German Grand Prix if it sees a repeat of what happened at Silverstone last weekend.
The British GP saw no less than five tyre failures which almost resulted in the race being red flagged.
The GPDA, which represents the majority of the grid, says it will withdraw its drivers if, during practice, the tyres show signs of failing in a similar fashion, citing driver safety as its biggest concern.
“We trust that the changes made to the tyres will have the desired results and that similar problems will not occur during the German GP weekend,” read a statement.
“If similar problems manifest themselves at the German GP, we shall immediately withdraw,” it added.
Pirelli will bring new tyres to the race with a kevlar band rather than a steel one, which it hopes will resolve the issue without causing too much change in terms performance.
