Pirelli changes hard tyre after criticism

Pirelli has adapted its hard compound in response to the recent criticism surrounding their tyres for the 2013 season.

The Italian supplier met with representatives from all 11 teams on Tuesday to discuss the matter. Whilst the majority were in favour of keeping the compounds as they are, Pirelli has taken the decision to make the hard compound last longer and degrade slower.

Motorsport director Paul Hembery says the changes will allow the teams to “run a wider range of strategies.”

“After evaluating tyre performance over the balance of the first four races, we took the decision – in consultation with all of the teams – to change the hard compound from Spain onwards, as we did in Barcelona two years ago when we also introduced a new hard tyre for the rest of the season.

“This latest version of the hard compound is much closer to the 2012 tyre, with the aim of giving the teams more opportunity to run a wider range of strategies in combination with the other compounds, which remain unchanged.”

Pirelli also confirmed which compounds would be taken to the next three races.

Spain will see the hard and medium in action, whilst Monaco will use the soft and supersoft. The supersoft will also make an appearance in Canada alongside the medium.
