A bid to transform the London Olympic Park into a Formula 1 circuit post-games has been put forward and is under consideration by the London Legacy Development Corporation.
The bid, which has the backing of Bernie Ecclestone, was tabled by Intelligent Transport Solutions Ltd which plans to hold a race in and around the Olympic stadium.
The idea is one of four being considered by the LLDC, which has the task of finding a use or uses for the park once the games have been and gone.
Speaking to Telegraph Sport, Ecclestone confirmed his interest in the proposal.
“This is a firm that happened to be bidding for use of the stadium, not to own it. They came up with a scheme whereby Formula One would race around the stadium, inside it, outside it. They wanted to make sure I would be interested,” he said. When asked if he was, he replied: “Yeah.”
Whilst the bid looks unlikely to come out on top, with West Ham FC currently leading the process, it’s believed there is support within the LLDC for the proposal which could be combined with another bid due to the race happening just once a year.
It would also hand Britain a second grand prix given Silverstone has a long-term contract to host F1.
Note: Next Thursday The F1 Times will have a CGI video showing Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button realising what a London Grand Prix could look like. Make sure you check back.
