F2 veteran Artem Markelov to make series return in Monaco

Formula 2 veteran Artem Markelov will make a one-off return to the series in Monaco next weekend.

Markelov stepped up to the category under its GP2 guise in 2014 and remained in the series with Russian Time for five years, taking the runner-up spot behind Charles Leclerc in 2017.

Markelov twice triumphed in Monaco – in 2016 and 2018 – but for 2019 departed the championship in order to compete in the Japan-based Super Formula series.

However with regular MP Motorsport racer Jordan King instead competing at the Indianapolis 500 the Dutch team has called up Markelov as a super sub.

“I am very happy to join MP Motorsport at Monaco”, said Markelov, “Monaco is a special place, and I can’t think of a better occasion for a one-off return to Formula 2.

“I’m looking forward to meeting lots of old friends and, of course, wish Jordan all the best in his effort to win the Indy 500.”

Ex-Manor F1 tester King is then set to return to the MP Motorsport-run car for the remainder of the season.
