Sebastien Buemi fights through to Marrakesh Formula E victory
Sebastien Buemi fought back from a grid penalty to claim his second straight Formula E victory on Saturday in Marrakesh after passing rookie Felix Rosenqvist late on.
Buemi qualified second behind pole-sitter Rosenqvist, but was demoted to seventh on the grid after a technical infringement on his car during qualifying.
The Swiss racer managed to pick his way up to third before pitting, going one lap longer than Rosenqvist and Jean-Eric Vergne in second to give himself more usable energy in the second half of the race.
Buemi put his extra pace to good use, catching Rosenqvist at almost two seconds per lap to pile pressure on the erstwhile leader. With Vergne dropping back after a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane, Buemi had the Mahindra driver firmly in his sights.
Buemi was able to get in Rosenqvist's slipstream before slinging his Renault e.dams car around the outside at Turn 11 to take the lead with six laps remaining.
From there, Buemi managed his remaining energy en route to picking up his eighth Formula E victory, leading Sam Bird across the line after the Briton passed the ailing Rosenqvist late on.
Nicolas Prost finished fourth in the second Renault e.dams ahead of Lucas di Grassi, who battled from 12th on the grid to take P5. Teammate Daniel Abt was sixth ahead of Oliver Turvey, with Vergne lagging home in P8. Nick Heidfeld finished ninth, while Jose Maria Lopez picked up his first Formula E point in P10.
