Niki Lauda has a lung transplant

Niki Lauda has had a lung transplant today at the Allgemeines Krankenhaus der Stadt Wien, referred to by the locals as AKH.

The hospital said the operation was required because Lauda was suffering from a severe lung disease. The operation was conducted by surgeons Walter Klepetko and Konrad.

The hospital said that the Lauda family will not make any public statements and requested privacy.

Lauda was supposed to be suffering from flu, but recent reports has said he was in intensive care in Vienna.
