Sargeant ‘will trust myself’ during rookie F1 season

Logan Sargeant (USA) Williams FW45 Monday 6th February 2023, Williams Racing Headquarters, Grove, England.

Logan Sargeant says he will try and forge his own decisions with Williams in 2023 rather than lean on more experienced team-mate Alex Albon.

Sargeant steps up to Williams this year after finishing fourth in Formula 2 last season and will be one of three rookies on the grid.

Albon, meanwhile, is entering his fourth season as a Formula 1 racer and second in Williams colours, having joined the team in 2022.

Sargeant labelled Albon as “a great team player, very open and honest” and “everything you could ask for as a team-mate”, but wants to ensure he does not become overly reliant on the Anglo-Thai.

“I think at the end of the day I have to trust myself, I have to trust my instincts and what I feel,” said Sargeant.

“If we feel like we’re heading in different directions in terms of the way the car’s set-up that’s maybe how it has to go but hopefully it all feels the same and we can move in the same general direction.

“I plan to not rely on him too much, I feel like I have to stand for myself and go through the hard times and the good times and experience all the different things and ultimately that’s what’ll make you better.

“I want to make this transition as quick and easy as possible – I know there’s going to be challenges, but hopefully I can get on top of it quickly.”

Sargeant will only have limited pre-season time before the opening round, with a shakedown planned for Silverstone on Saturday, ahead of three days of testing in Bahrain – at which duties will be shared with Albon.

“You just have to take things as they come,” said Sargeant.

“Obviously only having a day-and-a-half track time it becomes absolutely vital to make the most of [it] and I’m sure we’re going in what that being the plan – but it is what it is.”
