Helmet camera technology will be issued across the grid for the 2023 Formula 1 season after the sport entered an agreement with Racing Force Group.

The helmet cockpit view has been used sporadically across the last two seasons, having been in the pipeline for several years as F1 looked to explore new methods to excite fans and bring them closer to the on-track action.

It received high praise when it was used during the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix weekend inside Fernando Alonso’s helmet.

Certain drivers had it installed at select weekends last year, but the FIA moved to mandate the cameras at all races for the 2023 season.

“Following the trialling of the latest generation of helmet cameras over recent events, they have proved to be a great success, generating significant positive feedback from fans as a valuable addition to the broadcast of grands prix,” a statement from August 2022 read.

“Therefore, it was proposed and unanimously approved to update the 2023 technical regulations, mandating the use of these helmet cameras for all drivers from 2023 onwards.”

The provider of the technology has now been confirmed in Racing Force Group, with the camera labelled ‘The Driver’s Eye’.

“Racing Force Group and Formula 1 entered today into an agreement for the use of the helmet camera technology in the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship,” it said.

“The Driver’s Eye is the FIA-homologated micro camera (8 millimetres in diameter and weighing 1.43 gram) positioned at eye-level on the protective padding on the inside of the driver’s helmet.

“The technology will be available over the course of the 2023 season to all drivers and helmet manufacturers on the Formula 1 grid.”

The 2023 Formula 1 season will get underway on March 5 from the Bahrain International Circuit.
