Ferrari confirms Shwartzman and Giovinazzi as 2023 F1 reserves

Ferrari has confirmed that Robert Shwartzman and Antonio Giovinazzi will each handle Formula 1 reserve driver duties for the team in 2023.

Both drivers have been part of the Italian manufacturer’s academy for several years and have tested for it on a number of occasions.

Shwartzman was handed two FP1 outings with Ferrari last year in the US and Abu Dhabi, and also drove at the post-season test from the Yas Marina Circuit.

Now racing under an Israeli flag, Shwartzman returns to racing competition this year in the SRO GT World Challenge Europe, which will support his F1 reserve role.

“Honoured to step up as Scuderia Ferrari F1 Reserve Driver and continue my journey with the Ferrari family,” Shwartzman said.

“I look forward to working hard, getting back behind the wheel of the F1 car and racing in the GT World Challenge with Ferrari Competizioni GT!”

Giovinazzi will also hold a reserve role, with Ferrari ensuring that at least one of its back-ups will be present at every race this year.

Giovianzzi raced in F1 for three years with Alfa Romeo, but was dropped at the conclusion of the 2021 campaign.

The Italian driver will race in the World Endurance Championship this year, occupying one of Ferrari’s seats in the Hypercar class.

Ferrari will have further support from Antonio Fuoco and Davide Rigon, who will carry out development roles for the upcoming season.

Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz both return to the team in their third year in partnership, while a major change has occurred in the Team Principal role with Frederic Vasseur replacing Mattia Binotto.
