Could Honda supply F1 engines for Andretti?

Andretti Autosport and General Motors have teamed up to announce their intention to submit an Expression of Interest with the FIA when the formal process opens.

The American newcomer would enter as the Andretti Cadillac team.

With the registration deadline for the 2026 power units having passed, Andretti won’t be building their own power units – so who would be the likely candidate to supply the Power Units to the brand-new team, if their submission is successful?

GM president Mark Reuss has already stated that an agreement with a supplier has been made.

“We have a signed agreement with a power unit supplier to begin with and then as we move forward we bring a lot of our expertise to create things for the future as well.”

It has previously been reported that Andretti had a formal agreement with Renault, but there seems to be another, more likely candidate: Honda.

The Japanese manufacturer officially left F1 at the end of the 2021, but has shown renewed interest in the sport in recent months, increasing their branding on both the Red Bull and AlphaTauri cars and registering their intention with the FIA to produce Power Units for the 2026 regulations.

Cadillac and Honda already have a standing collaboration on electric vehicles, so the relationship between the companies is a positive one. The two brands also compete against one another in IndyCar.

When asked about Honda, Reuss said: “Obviously we do have a large partnership with Honda with EVs, and we also compete against Honda in series like IndyCar.

“So we do have that natural respect and relationship – which is not problematic at all, but we’ll talk about the engine at a later date.”
