Red Bull Formula 1 reserve driver Liam Lawson will compete in Super Formula in 2023.

Lawson, 20, finished third in this year’s Formula 2 championship, his second season in the series, with four Sprint Race victories.

He was appointed as Red Bull’s reserve driver in the wake of Jüri Vips’ exit from the team, and tested the RB18 at Yas Marina, taking part in FP1 and the young driver test.

Lawson also represented AlphaTauri during FP1 in Belgium and Mexico City.

The New Zealander will now link up with Team Mugen for next year’s Super Formula championship.

He participated in last week’s group test at Suzuka and during Honda’s announcement of its 2023 motorsport programme on Monday his seat at Team Mugen was confirmed.

“I’ve raced in Formula 2, and this car is a step up – it’s a lot faster, the [levels of] downforce, so between now and next year I’ll be training a lot more,” said Lawson.

“It’s going to be a big adjustment for me – the goal for next season, I’d like to be fighting for the championship, I think I’m in the best possible position with Mugen, so I’m excited.

“Formula 1 is my dream but the focus for me right now is Super Formula, so that’s all I’m thinking about for next season.”

Lawson follows in the footsteps of other Red Bull proteges, most notably Pierre Gasly, who competed in Super Formula after Formula 2.

Lawson will partner reigning two-time champion Tomoki Nojiri at Team Mugen.
