What F1 moment is nominated for FIA ‘Action of the Year’?

The FIA has revealed its nominations for the 2022 ‘Action of the Year’, with one moment from the Formula 1 season in contention.

F1 has been heavily favoured at the FIA prize-giving gala, with a moment from the series winning the ‘Action of the Year’ award five times since it was launched in 2014.

Last year, Fernando Alonso picked up the spoils for his defence against Lewis Hamilton in Budapest, while the year prior, Kimi Raikkonen’s opening lap in Portugal saw him take the honour.

Max Verstappen has secured the award four times (including once in Formula 3) since its inception – but this year, it’s Lewis Hamilton who is in with a chance.

The moment in question is his double overtake on Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc at the British Grand Prix earlier this year, which saw him progress from fourth to second in one corner.

Hamilton would go on to finish the race in third place.

The seven-time F1 champion is facing competition from a number of other racing moments, including Formula E’s qualifying duel between Alexander Sims and Jean-Eric Vergne, when both drivers set the exact same lap time.

Sims progressed through as he set the time first

Also in contention is Oliver Bearman for the racing skill he showed at the Formula 3 round from Zandvoort, making two difficult overtakes in quick succession on Alexander Smolyar and Gregoire Saucy.

The 2022 FIA prize-giving gala will take place on December 9 next month.
