Pierre Gasly is just two penalty points away from receiving a race ban in Formula 1.

The Frenchman picked up one penalty point at the Mexican Grand Prix after forcing Lance Stroll off the track.

The two went side-by-side early in the race into Turn 4, with Gasly attempting to move up the inside of the Aston Martin driver.

However, he locked up his front left tyre and ran wide, completing the overtaking off the track, with Stroll also running wide.

The stewards noted the incident, before launching a quick investigation. They issued Gasly a five-second time penalty, as well as one penalty point, bringing his total across the last 12 months to 10.

“Gasly made a pass on Stroll at Turn 4, however in doing so he locked up and left the track at the exit of the turn, completing the pass off track,” read a statement from the stewards. “He thereby gained a lasting advantage.”

Drivers that pick up 12 penalty points across a 12-month period are handed an automatic race ban.

Gasly picked up two penalty points at the US Grand Prix earlier this month, which followed another two that were handed to him in Japan the race before.

His other points were picked up in Spain and Austria earlier this year.

Gasly won’t have points dropped off his licence until May 23, 2023.

A driver has never been hit with a race ban in F1 since the 12 penalty point rule was introduced, however it has happened on a number of occasions in Formula 2.
