Channel 4 will continue to broadcast free-to-air Formula 1 coverage in 2023 after reaching a deal with Sky Sports.

Channel 4 has broadcast in the UK and Ireland since 2016, but currently has the rights to showcase one race – the British Grand Prix – live.

That will remain unchanged in 2023, with Sky Sports holding exclusive rights to broadcast all sessions in the UK and Ireland.

Sky Sports recently announced that it had extended its deal to broadcast F1 until 2029.

Next year, as has been the case for the last several seasons, Channel 4 will showcase highlight shows of every qualifying and race session.

Channel 4’s Chief Executive Alex Mahon said: “It’s fantastic news that motorsport fans will be able to follow all the action during the 2023 Formula 1 season on free to air television thanks to this latest deal with Sky.

“Our strong, long-standing relationship with our excellent partner Sky has delivered some fantastic moments for viewers.

“Last year’s thrilling Formula 1 season finale between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, England’s dramatic win at the 2019 Cricket World Cup and Betfred Super League rugby have all been made available to British audiences on free to air television thanks to our close working relationship with Sky, and it’s great to see this continuing into 2023.”

Channel 4’s F1 show producer Whisper was recently nominated for the Best Sports Entertainment Programme by the Broadcast Sport Awards.

Next year’s F1 season is set to feature a record-breaking 24 races, starting in Bahrain and concluding once again in Abu Dhabi.
