Horner: US F1 driver could be long-term option for Red Bull

Formula 1’s governing body has formally confirmed that Colton Herta will not be granted a Super Licence.

Red Bull regarded IndyCar race winner Herta as a prospective candidate for a 2023 AlphaTauri seat as it evaluated the notion of Pierre Gasly switching to Alpine.

Herta’s results across the last three seasons in IndyCar were not sufficient for him to be issued a Super Licence under the FIA’s system.

Red Bull had already moved on from the idea of attempting to receive an exemption and on Friday the FIA formally outlined the situation.

FIA reveals revised racing guidelines and penalty framework for F1 2025

“The FIA confirms that an enquiry was made via the appropriate channels that led to the FIA confirming that the driver Colton Herta does not have the required number of points to be granted an FIA Super Licence,” read a statement.

“The FIA continuously reviews its regulations and procedures, including with respect to Super Licence eligibility, with the main factors being considered with respect to this topic being safety, experience and performance in the context of the pathway.”

Herta is expected to remain with Andretti in IndyCar next season.

AlphaTauri confirmed on Thursday that Yuki Tsunoda will remain with the squad into 2023.

Williams super-sub Nyck de Vries is understood to be the leading candidate for AlphaTauri if it opts to release Gasly for Alpine.

Simple solution. Earn it. Start winning in Indy. Finish in the top 9 this year and top 2 next year and you got 40 Super License points.

Correction: He needs to win Indy next year for 40+ points.

The idea is still the same, earn it and you’re in.
