Verstappen edges out Leclerc to Zandvoort F1 pole

Max Verstappen has taken back-to-back pole positions at his home track in Zandvoort, as he beat Charles Leclerc to the fastest time on Saturday.

The Dutchman’s best time was a 1:10.342, which was just two-hundredths of a second faster than Leclerc’s attempt.

Sergio Perez spun in the final seconds of the session which caused a yellow flag, denying those behind them the chance to improve.

Perez ended up in fifth place, behind Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton in third and fourth respectively.

George Russell was sixth, while compatriot Lando Norris was seventh. Amid question marks regarding his F1 future, Mick Schumacher was eighth.

Yuki Tsunoda out-qualified AlphaTauri team-mate Pierre Gasly, with the former just making it through to Q3. He ended the day in ninth.

Lance Stroll had a surprising turn of pace and advanced to Q3 – but he couldn’t make up any positions in the final session due to a technical issue.

Gasly was eliminated from Q2 in 11th place, ahead of Esteban Ocon, amid rumours that the duo could become team-mates at Alpine next year.

Out-going Alpine driver Fernando Alonso was 13th, ahead of Zhou Guanyu and Alexander Albon.

Valtteri Bottas failed to join his Alfa Romeo team-mate in escaping the Q1 drop zone and was 16th fastest.

Kevin Magnussen was also eliminated in the opening session, as was the second McLaren of Daniel Ricciardo. The Danish driver was originally classified ahead of Ricciardo, but had his fastest attempt deleted due to a track limits violation.

Sebastian Vettel made a mistake on his final hot lap in Q1 at the penultimate corner, having been caught out by sand on the racing line, and took a trip through the gravel before ending the session in 19th.

Nicholas Latifi was 20th, one-second down on nearest rival Vettel, having been hampered by an engine glitch.

Vettel and Ricciardo in 19th and 17th. Pathetic.
