Red Bull first to sample revamped Spa F1 track

Red Bull has become the first Formula 1 team to try out the revamped Spa-Francorchamps Circuit ahead of this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.

Extensive work has been carried out at the venue over the last several months, with a number of corners renovated.

Construction began in November of last year. A number of run-off areas have been extended and gravel traps have been added.

Notably, the Eau Rouge/Raidillion complex has changed somewhat, with the foot of the uphill climb having its rails moved backwards. Existing now are larger run-off areas at the start, middle and end of the section.

In recent years, Formula 2, the World Endurance Championship and W Series have all had major incidents occur at the corner.

The Milton Keynes-based outfit took to the track in an older F1 car to sample the changes. The layout of the historic circuit is unaltered.

Speaking ahead of the race event in Belgium, Pirelli’s Head of F1 Mario Isola said: “This year, Spa has undergone some of the biggest changes we have seen since we started going there in the modern era of Formula 1.

“In addition to some new asphalt on five corners, there are some new gravel traps on four corners, which are much closer to the side of the track.

“Drivers will need to pay more attention to track limits, and there’s also an increased chance of sharp gravel being dragged onto the surface. 

“The epic nature of Spa remains unchanged though, with all the traditional challenges that make the circuit so exciting still in place.”
