Masi set for first job following F1 departure

Ex-Formula 1 Race Director Michael Masi is set to take on his first motorsport role following his departure from the FIA earlier this year.

Masi took over the position as F1’s Race Director following the sudden death of Charlie Whiting in 2019, but vacated the role ahead of the 2022 campaign.

According to News Corp, Masi is being lined up to replace Neil Crompton as chair of the Supercars Commission.

The Australian was criticised throughout his F1 reign for certain decisions, with consistency being labelled as a key issue at times.

However, matters came to a boiling point at last year’s season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Red Bull’s Max Verstappen beat Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton to the title.

Masi allowed the cars in between Hamilton and Verstappen to unlap themselves during a Safety Car period, while those behind Verstappen stayed put.

Verstappen, on fresh Soft tyres, overtook Hamilton on the final lap to win his maiden championship.

The FIA conducted an investigation into the incident and determined that human error was behind the mishap.

It confirmed in February that Masi was no longer the sport’s Race Director, before announcing in June that he had left the organisation entirely.

Masi’s former position is being shared by Eduardo Freitas and Niels Wittich this year.
