Rahal Letterman Lanigan has announced that it will retain its rookie driver Christian Lundgaard for the 2023 IndyCar season and beyond.
Lundgaard joined IndyCar full time this season after contesting two years in Formula 2, and has adapted quickly to his new discipline.
His strong effort during a single outing last year sealed RLL’s decision to add him to the team this year, and now the 21-year-old will be continuing with the team for at least the next couple years.
The release labeled Lundgaard’s new contract as a ‘restructured’ agreement, which seemingly expanded upon his existing rookie contract.
“I have to say a big thanks to Bobby [Rahal], David [Letterman] and Mike [Lanigan] for giving me this opportunity to extend my time with the team,” said Lundgaard in a release. “We’ve had some good results lately and I’m sure this has also helped their decision.
“First of all, I’m just happy and super excited that they gave me this opportunity. A year ago at the Grand Prix, we qualified well and they decided that they wanted me for a full season and we made the most of the opportunity so far. I’m sure there are times when we could have performed better but now we have the opportunity to continue this progress
“I’m happy for everyone at the team, my family and the sponsors and investors, everyone that has made this possible. I’m looking forward to continuing to build momentum.”
Lundgaard currently leads the Rookie of the Year standings, and is in prime position to take home the honors with only a few races left in the season.
He has bested his more-tenured team-mates Graham Rahal and Jack Harvey a few times this year, including when he took home his maiden podium at the Gallagher Grand Prix on the Indianapolis road course last month.
The Danish driver will make his first appearance at World Wide Technology Raceway this weekend, where he will look to continue on his momentum from the last few races.
