Rahal ‘sure’ there’s a seat for Vettel in IndyCar

Graham Rahal says that he’s sure there is an open seat in IndyCar if Sebastian Vettel wishes to continue racing.

Last week, Vettel announced that he would retire from F1 at the end of the 2022 campaign, ending his 15-stint in the sport.

Rahal, who has six IndyCar wins to his name, invited Vettel for an IndyCar test earlier this year after the four-time F1 champion praised America’s “proper tracks” – using Road America as an example.

Vettel has not yet clarified whether or not he will stop racing completely when he steps away from F1.

Rahal says that the IndyCar door is open for him, amid a period in which many F1-associated drivers are switching to the North-American series.

“It’s open anytime he wants to try and maybe he wants to come race, I’m sure we can find a way to do it,” Rahal told The Race.

“Like [Romain] Grosjean, I think Seb would find IndyCar a much more relaxed [environment], but also more competitive, for sure.

“And a guy like him, as a racer, I’m sure finishing 10th on back is not fun, particularly coming from the world championships and everything else that he has.

“So, if he wants to come try it, look, I’m sure there’s a seat, there’s a home for him. In many ways, we [Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing] re gearing up to look at a fourth [car] in the future anyway.

“So, not saying he wants to do it full-time, but if he wants to come try it, he certainly can.”

Vettel is one of the most successful drivers in F1’s history, but has found himself competing in the midfield pack across the last handful of seasons.

The German currently sits 14th in the Drivers’ Championship on 16 points.
