Albon teases Piastri with hysterical contract extension tweet
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A statement on Alexander Albon’s personal social media message drew laughs from the motorsport community on Wednesday.

The Thai-British driver, who re-joined Formula 1 with  Williams this year, will remain with the team on a multi-season deal beginning from 2023.

Albon took to social media to make the announcement, using Oscar Piastri’s message from Tuesday night as his template.

Piastri stated on Tuesday evening, after Alpine announced his promotion for the 2023 season, that he had not signed a contract and would not be competing for the Enstone-based outfit in 2023.

Albon used the same message to announce his extension with Williams.

I understand that, with my agreement, Williams Racing have put out a press release this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is right and I have signed a contract with Williams for 2023. I will be driving for Williams next year.

I understand that, without my agreement, Alpine F1 have put out a press release late this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will not be driving for Alpine next year.

The tweet drew responses from fellow drivers, including Piastri himself, who replied with a gif that reads: “Well played, sir. That was good”.

Mercedes’ George Russell, who is known to be a friend of Albon’s, said: “Love that!”, while ex-F1 driver and 2022 Indianapolis 500 winner Marcus Ericsson replied, “Hahaha legend.”
