Aston Martin’s new F1 rear wing attracts attention in Hungary

Aston Martin has arrived at the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend with an updated front wing that has attracted attention in the Formula 1 paddock.

A new tip has been added to the edges of the rear wing, making it somewhat resemble the 2021 specification.

The new part on the endplate curves upwards and appears to break one of F1’s crucial aims of the 2022 regulations, as the rear wing assembly for this campaign has changed dramatically from last year.

Aston Martin says that it is a maximum downforce wing for use specifically at the Hungaroring, with performance not overly emphasised by straight-line speed at the venue.

The team has seemingly found a loophole relating to the curvature of the rear wing in the new-for-2022 technical regulations.

According to Sky F1, the FIA was consulted on the rear wing throughout its design process, and are happy that the element is legal.

Although it aims to increase downforce, it will in turn produce drag on the straights – however it is not a detrimental factor around the narrow and twisting Hungaroring track.

The FIA has not provided public communications on the design, but may look into it and decide whether or not to outlaw the concept for the 2023 campaign.

Aston Martin currently sits ninth in the Constructors’ Championship, with point-finishes a rarity in the opening half of the 2022 season.

The Silverstone-based squad wasn’t the only team to arrive with fresh parts, as Haas unveiled a heavily upgraded car in Hungary.
