Dalton Kellett has been given a six-place grid penalty by IndyCar series officials for the Detroit Grand Prix, the result of an unapproved engine change in Indianapolis.

The AJ Foyt Racing team had to change Kellett’s engine after the driver crashed in the Monday practice session that followed qualifying.

The rule that was violated states that “Once an Indianapolis 500 Engine is fitted to the Car, removal of the Engine prior to the Indianapolis 500 Race is an Unapproved Engine Change-Out, unless it is for Repair.”

On account of the series wishing to keep the starting order of the Indy 500 the same as the qualifying result, the penalties earned during that weekend are deferred to the following race.

As such, Kellet will have to start three rows behind wherever he qualifies in Saturday’s knockout sessions around the 2.35-mile street course that lies less than a mile from the Canadian border.

Before qualifying, two practice sessions will take place to give drivers a chance to acclimate to get a feel for the bumpy track.
