Vandoorne, de Vries stay on as Mercedes reserves

Stoffel Vandoorne (BEL) Mercedes AMG F1 Reserve Driver. United States Grand Prix, Friday 22nd October 2021. Circuit of the Americas, Austin, Texas, USA.

Mercedes’ Formula E drivers Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries will continue to share duties as reserve driver for its Formula 1 team.

Vandoorne spent two years competing in Formula 1 for McLaren, in 2017/18, and has since been affiliated with Mercedes.

De Vries, the reigning Formula E champion, has been linked with the manufacturer since claiming the 2019 Formula 2 title.

De Vries was briefly linked to a Formula 1 seat during the 2021 silly season, and was under consideration at Williams, but ultimately missed out.

De Vries and Vandoorne continue to form Mercedes’ Formula E pairing – with de Vries winning the opening 2022 race in Saudi Arabia – and will provide back-up to Mercedes’ Formula 1 team.

Each Formula 1 team must run a young driver (classified as a driver with fewer than two race starts) during two practice sessions in 2022 – a role de Vries would fit as he, unlike Vandoorne, has not started a grand prix.
