F1 set to make Covid-19 vaccines mandatory for 2022

Formula 1 is set to introduce mandatory Covid-19 vaccines for all personnel for the 2022 season.

This year, the sport is facing a record-breaking 23-race calendar, in what will be the third season since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

BBC Sport reports that all personnel entering the paddock during a grand prix weekend must be fully vaccinated this.

The measure will mean a relaxation of Covid restrictions within F1, and the sport will also respect vaccine and other Covid policies of each national government from event to event.

The report also states that the mandate is not set to disrupt any of the drivers’ ability to compete, as all are understood to be vaccinated.

As well as drivers, the requirement for vaccination will extend to team members, media, hospitality workers and guests present at races.

The FIA will consider an exemption on a case-by-case basis, but only if the person in question agrees to a stricter testing regime than those vaccinated. In those who have been vaccinated, the frequency of testing will be reduced.

A number of F1 drivers have already contracted Covid-19 since the pandemic began, with Sergio Perez, Lance Stroll, Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, Pierre Gasly, Kimi Raikkonen and Nikita Mazepin all testing positive.

However, those who have recovered from Covid-19 will not be granted access to the paddock if they are unvaccinated.
