Formula 1 fans have picked their top five races that took place during the 2021 season.

The action-packed year came to an exciting conclusion last month in Abu Dhabi, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen beating Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton to the title.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix features on the list, but doesn’t come in at the top spot in a survey conducted by over 52,000 F1 fans.

19% of responders listed the Italian Grand Prix as their race of the year, which saw McLaren return to the top step of the podium for the first time since 2012.

In the hectic race at Monza, title protagonists Verstappen and Hamilton collided, with both being eliminated from the race.

Their exciting desert duel in Abu Dhabi was second on the list, tallying 16% of votes.

The Sao Paulo Grand Prix was third, where Verstappen and Hamilton jostled for the lead, with the latter coming out on top.

Sergio Perez’s first Red Bull win in Azerbaijan was fourth, with that outing seeing tyre blowouts for Lance Stroll and Verstappen, and a costly mistake for Hamilton at a late-race restart.

Fifth on the list was Hungary. That race saw a bizarre moment when Lewis Hamilton was the only driver to take the starting lights after every other car pitted for dry weather tyres, before Esteban Ocon went on to take his maiden victory in F1.

Top five races of 2021;

Italian Grand Prix – 19%

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – 16%

Sao Paulo Grand Prix – 10%

Azerbaijan Grand Prix – 8%

Hungarian Grand Prix – 7%
