Raikkonen benched again, Kubica gets Monza chance

Robert Kubica will continue to compete for Alfa Romeo at this weekend’s Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, in place of Kimi Räikkönen.

Räikkönen returned a positive Covid-19 test early on Saturday at the Dutch Grand Prix weekend.

He had participated in both Friday practice sessions but the positive test forced him to withdraw from the remainder of the event’s action.

Kubica filled in for Räikkönen thereafter and qualified in 18th before going on to take 15th in the race.

Räikkönen was given approval to return to his home in Switzerland, where he is isolating, but will not compete in Italy this weekend.

Kubica, Alfa Romeo’s test and reserve driver, will therefore have a second chance behind the wheel of the C41.

“First of all, I want to share my best wishes for Kimi: I hope he makes a full recovery and returns to the cockpit soon,” said Kubica.

“I am looking forward to racing in Monza, an incredible track in which I claimed my first podium, in 2006.

“Unlike Zandvoort, it is a track I know well and this will help, particularly since the Sprint Qualifying weekend format means we will be one practice session short.

“I am happy with what I did in Holland and I can’t wait to help the team out one more time in Monza.”
