F1’s Miami debut set for first half of May 2022

Formula 1’s inaugural Miami Grand Prix is set to be held in the first half of next May, according to the championship’s boss.

After a protracted proposal period Formula 1 in April finally announced a 10-year deal to hold a grand prix around the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

It was outlined that Miami’s first round would take place in Q2 of 2022 and Stefano Domenicali has now zeroed in on a more specific date.

“We are less than halfway through 2021, but planning for 2022 has been ongoing for some time,” said Domenicali during an investor call on Friday.

“We hope to announce the provisional calendar in September/October.

“We can confirm that the much-anticipated Miami Grand Prix will happen in the first half of May, and demand for tickets is high, even though sales have not officially started.”

Domenicali’s comments point towards Miami and Canada not being paired, as initially expected, with Montreal’s round historically taking place in mid-June.

Miami’s round is in addition to the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas, which has been run in October/November since joining the championship in 2012.

It is expected that Formula 1’s 2022 season will begin in Bahrain in mid-March, followed by Saudi Arabia a week later, with the event at Jeddah set to move from the penultimate slot it has in 2021.

Australia, which has traditionally been the season-opening round is likely to be provisionally slotted in a couple of weeks later in April, depending on the country’s entry restrictions.

Monaco’s grand prix is already scheduled for May 29.

Formula 1’s 2022 calendar is likely to remain fluid owing to the ongoing pandemic, which has heavily affected the schedule since March 2020, with several events cancelled or rescheduled across the past two seasons.
