Red Bull has lodged a request to the FIA to review the incident that occured between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen at the British Grand Prix.
Championship leader Verstappen was eliminated on the opening lap of the race in a high-speed collision with Hamilton at Copse corner, which was measured at 51G.
Hamilton was issued a 10-second penalty for the incident, as well as two penalty points on his superlicence, however the seven-time world champion still went on to claim the victory, his eighth at Silverstone.
The petition was officially submitted by Red Bull last Friday, July 23, and now team representatives from Mercedes and Red Bull will report to the stewards via a video conference this Thursday at 4PM CET, ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend.
Red Bull must present significant and new information in relation to the crash to the stewards, who will meet to discuss whether or not a review should take place.
The situation is being dealt with under Article 14 of the FIA’s International Sporting code, which staes: “If, in Competitions forming part of an FIA Championship, cup, trophy, challenge or series, or of an international series, a significant and relevant new element is discovered which was unavailable to the parties seeking the review at the time of the decision concerned, the stewards who have given a ruling or, failing this, those designated by the FIA, may decide to re-examine their decision following a petition for review…”
The energy drink-backed team vented frustration post-race at Silverstone, with team boss Christian Horner accusing Hamilton of “dirty driving” during the opening lap.
Ahead of this weekend’s race, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said: “Everyone has their own opinion on the events of Silverstone, and it was a very polarising incident.
“However, the most important thing is that Max is OK. It’s never nice to see a car crashing, particularly at such high speeds and at a corner like that, so we’re glad he emerged from the accident unscathed.”
