F1 confirms revised Monza schedule with new ‘F1 Sprint’ format

Formula 1 has officially confirmed the Italian Grand Prix will be the second event to run a revised weekend format this year.

At last weekend’s British Grand Prix the three-stage knockout qualifying session was held on Friday, which set the grid for a 17-lap race, called F1 Sprint, on Saturday.

The final order at the end of the shorter race determined the grid for Sunday’s grand prix, which saw title rivals Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen collide on the opening lap.

The round at Monza, which takes place from September 10 – 12, will follow the same format, with the official schedule verified by F1.

The weekend will kick off with a one-hour FP1 session at 14:30 local time on Friday, followed by traditional qualifying at 18:00.

FP2 on Saturday morning will also run one hour, commencing at 12:30 before F1 Sprint at 16:30.

The green flag for Sunday’s grand prix will wave at 15:00.

F1 added that the “third and final 2021 Grand Prix to trial the F1 Sprint format is expected to be a flyaway event and will be confirmed later in the year”.

Brazil had been tipped as a potential venue, however doubts remain over the round’s place on the 2021 F1 calendar for a second year running amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
