Whelen Engineering wins shortened WeatherTech 240
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Whelen Engineering Racing has taken victory in the WeatherTech 240 at Watkins Glen, which was shortened as the result of a red flag due to severe weather.

The #31 Cadillac DPi-VR of Felipe Nasr and Pipo Derani first took the lead of the race in the first hour of the race as it made an early stop and was running on a different strategy.

That strategy would pay dividents when a severe weather warning brought out a red flag shortly after the team had made its second stop.

As a result, the team could make a shorter stop when the race resumed behind the safety car, jumping up to the lead.

Felipe Nasr then had to hold off a charging Renger van der Zande in the #01 Chip Ganassi Racing Cadillac DPi-VR, who finished second alongside Kevin Magnussen.

For Derani and Nasr, it was their first IMSA win since the Cadillac Grand Prix of Sebring in July of 2020.

Ricky Taylor and Filipe Albuquerque finished third from pole in the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Acura ARX-05, with the #5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac of Tristan Vautier and Loic Duval fourth.

Mazda Motorsports finished fifth after Harry Tincknell led the race when the red flag came out, but the #55 Mazda RT24-P fell down the order when Oliver Jarvis spun behind the safety car, ultimately rounding out the top five.

PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports took a lights-to-flag win, with the #52 ORECA 07-Gibson of Ben Keating and Mikkel Jensen, with the #11 WIN Autosport ORECA of Steven Thomas and Tristan Nunez second and the #8 Tower Motorsport ORECA of John Farano and Gabriel Aubry third.

Corvette Racing took a one-two in GTLM, with Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor taking the win in the #3 Corvette C8.R.

Taylor and Garcia started on pole but lost the lead in the first hour to the #4 sister car of Nick Tandy and Tommy Milner, before Garcia took the lead back after the restart.

The #79 WeatherTech Racing Porsche 911 RSR-19 took a distant third in the hands of Cooper MacNeil and Matt Campbell.

Riley Motorsports celebrated a one two in the LMP3 class, with Felipe Fraga and Gar Robinson in the #74 Ligier JS P320 coming home ahead of team-mates Dylan Murry and Jim Cox in second place.

Colin Braun and Jon Bennett completed the podium in the #54 CORE Autosport Ligier, while the #36 Andretti Autosport Ligier, early leaders in the hands of Jarett Andretti and Oliver Askew, finished fourth.

Vasser Sullivan Racing also took a one-two in GTD, with the #14 Lexus RC F GT3 of Aaron Telitz and Jack Hawksworth taking the victory ahead of team-mates Zach Veach and Frankie Montecalvo, which led the race since the opening lap but lost out in the closing stages.

The Heart of Racing’s #23 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 of Ross Gunn and Roman De Angelis completed the podium.
