Juan Manuel Correa has joined Sauber’s driver development scheme ahead of the second round of the FIA Formula 3 season.
Correa was part of the Sauber Junior Team in 2019 prior to the high-speed Formula 2 accident in Belgium that left him with severe injuries.
As part of that scheme Correa tested Formula 1 machinery with Alfa Romeo at Paul Ricard shortly before the accident in August 2019.
Correa returned to competition in Formula 3 this year, scoring a point at Barcelona, and has now joined the Sauber Academy, which succeeded the Sauber Junior Team for 2020.
“It’s very special to be back with the Sauber Academy: they’re the junior programme of the team I was with in 2019, when I had my first and only F1 test, and it’s a great feeling to be working with them again,” he said.
“I am very excited to show the Academy’s branding on my car and my helmet already from this weekend in France and I am looking forward to helping the team whenever needed, be it in the sim or elsewhere.
“I am very grateful to ART and [team boss] Sébastien Philippe, and of course to [Sauber Motorsport CEO] Fred Vasseur, for all the support he has given me, and to everyone else at Sauber, from [Sauber Sporting Director] Beat Zehnder to all those who have been absolutely amazing and so supportive since my accident and throughout my recovery.
“It’s an honour to be back with this team.”
