Magnussen takes maiden IMSA pole in Detroit

Kevin Magnussen has taken his first pole position in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship, topping qualifying for the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic at Belle Isle.

Magnussen posted a 01:20:031 in the closing stages of a chaotic session in the #01 Chip Ganassi Cadillac DPi-VR, scoring his first pole position since 2013.

The Dane posted his quickest time mere moments after Tristan Vautier planted the #5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac in the wall at turn 4, curtailing the session.

Magnussen outpaced the #55 Mazda RT24-P of Harry Tincknell by a mere 0.021s, with Pipo Derani third in the #31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac.

The two Acura runners struggled at Belle Isle, with Ricky Taylor only managing fourth in the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing ARX-05, and Olivier Pla’s #60 Meyer Shank Racing Acura ARX-05 last in class behind Vautier’s stricken Cadillac.

Nick Tandy took pole position in the two-car GTLM class, putting the #4 Corvette C8.R ahead of the #3 car of team-mate Jordan Taylor.

GTD qualifying produces a surprise result as Richard Heistand brought CarBahn with Peregrine Racing its first pole position in the WeatherTech Sportscar Championship.

Heistand posted a 01:30:529 in the #39 Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo, which proved enough to hold off the #12 Vasser Sullivan Racing Lexus RC F GT3 of Frankie Montecalvo.

Roman De Angelis put the #23 Heart of Racing Aston Martin Vantage GT3 third on the grid, ahead of Robby Foley and Aaron Telitz for Turner Motorsport and Vasser Sullivan Racing.

After suffering an engine failure in an earlier practice session, the #1 Paul Miller Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo was repaired in time for Madison Snow to qualify sixth.

The battle for qualifying points in GTD went the way of Mario Farnbacher, who went quickest in the #76 Compass Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo.
