Formula 1’s 2021 calendar has undergone another revision, with Turkey postponed, France moved, and a second event in Austria added to the schedule for a second successive season.
Formula 1 had originally planned to visit Canada on June 13 but entry restrictions into the country proved an insurmountable hurdle.
Instead a replacement round in Turkey, which initially returned to the schedule last November after a nine-year absence, was added to the calendar.
But Formula 1 was dealt a major blow last week when Turkey was placed on the red list by the United Kingdom, meaning a substantial number of personnel would have to undertake hotel quarantine.
It means that just 16 days after its inclusion on the 2021 calendar was formally confirmed Formula 1 has called off the Turkish event.
It comes just a day after UEFA moved the Champions League final, scheduled for May 29, from Istanbul to Porto, Portugal.
The promoter of the event in Turkey has requested the possibility to reschedule the event for later in 2021 in case further changes are made to the calendar.
It mirrors a request made by the promoter of the Chinese Grand Prix, which was indefinitely postponed back in January, having been provisionally scheduled for mid-April.
As a consequence of the situation organisers of the French Grand Prix have agreed to bring forward their race, originally planned for June 27, to June 20.
Formula 1 will then travel to Austria for two rounds, to be held on June 27 and July 4, meaning that for a second successive season the Red Bull Ring will host multiple events.
The Red Bull Ring opened the delayed 2020 season with back-to-back events last July.
The first event at the venue, on June 27, will again be known as the Styrian Grand Prix.
The alterations to the calendar means Formula 1 still has a record-breaking 23 grands prix scheduled in 2021.
Doubts remain over flyaway events in the latter half of the season owing to entry restrictions and case numbers in some territories.
