Monaco’s government has approved a limited capacity for this month’s Formula 1 round in the Principality.

Formula 1’s Monaco Grand Prix did not take place in 2020 due to the pandemic, marking the first time in 65 years that the event was not held.

Construction of the temporary facility was completed in time for last month’s Historic Grand Prix while this weekend Monaco’s streets will play host to the E-Prix.

Up to 6,500 spectators will be permitted access to the Formula E round while those watching from balconies must stand a metre apart from each other, and boat capacity is restricted to 12 per vessel.

For the Formula 1 event, which is scheduled from May 20 through 23, a grandstand capacity of 7,500 people per day – approximately 40 per cent capacity – has been approved.

Around 3,000 spectators will be allowed for Friday, when only support categories run, owing to the unique timetable in which Formula 1 practice takes place on Thursday.

Spectators will be permitted to travel into Monaco from external territories but must provide a negative PCR test taken within the preceding 72 hours.

The last two Formula 1 events in Italy and Portugal took place without spectators.

On Monday organisers of this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix revealed 1,000 spectators will be permitted access, though only on race day, in line with government measures.
