Hamilton yet to discuss post-2012 contract

Lewis Hamilton isn’t thinking about renewing his contract or joining a rival outfit just yet. Instead the 27-year-old says he is focusing on winning the championship.

The Brit has reportedly been offered a new £20 million a season contract with his current outfit, McLaren, amid reports he may be looking to leave the Woking outfit for Red Bull, Ferrari or Mercedes.

Despite the offer or quite possibly offers, Hamilton says he’s holding off making a decision to focus his efforts on fighting for the titie.

“I haven’t even discussed it,” he said on Thursday. “It is just because I underestimated how difficult the season was going to be. I underestimated how busy I would be, and then I also realised how unimportant it is at the moment.

“The championship is more important than what I have to do for my next contract. My future at the moment is not important. What is important is that I capitalise on maximising this year.”

He also denied reports he’s looking further afield than McLaren following numerous errors by the team in recent races.

“I am not looking at anyone,” he added. “I am just trying to focus on this season and trying to focus on winning.

“I could sit down if I wanted to. But I have a job at the moment and I am not in no rush, no rush at all, so there is no need to do it now.”
