Track limits at Turn 4 to be enforced – but not in the race

The FIA has issued updated event notes outlining that track limits through Turn 4 at the Bahrain International Circuit will be enforced – but not in Sunday’s race.

Formula 1 is holding its season-opening round at the venue, which held pre-season testing two weeks ago, at which drivers regularly ran wide through the exit of Turn 4.

On Thursday it was outlined that they would be permitted to do so but after FP1 revised notes were issued amending the situation.

“A lap time achieved during any practice session by leaving the track and cutting behind the red and white kerb on the exit of Turn 4, will result in that lap time being invalidated by the stewards,” read a line added to the notes sent by Race Director Michael Masi.

However as it stands this only applies for the remaining two practice sessions and qualifying.

For Sunday’s race it has been outlined that “the track limits at the exit of Turn 4 will not be monitored with regard to setting a lap time, as the defining limits are the artificial grass and the gravel trap in that location.”

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen went quickest in Friday’s opening session.
