Russell joins GPDA in director role, replaces Grosjean

Williams’ George Russell has been named a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA), replacing the IndyCar-bound Romain Grosjean.

The GPDA represents the interests of all the drivers on the Formula 1 grid. In his new role, Russell will work alongside fellow F1 driver and director Sebastian Vettel and chairman Alex Wurz.

“It is an honour and privilege to be nominated director of the GPDA, I appreciate the support of my fellow drivers in entrusting this role to me and recognise the responsibility it entails,” Russell said.

“In its six decades of existence, the GPDA has been an integral part of supporting and shaping F1 safety, for the sport and our fans. I am looking forward to tackling the new challenges and opportunities alongside Anastasia, Sebastian and Alex.”

While Grosjean has vacated his role as a director, the Frenchman will remain on-board as an advisor in 2021 “to finish his ongoing on safety and the lessons learned from his accident [in Bahrain]”.

Alongside Russell’s appointment, the GPDA has nominated its first ever non-driver director in legal advisor Anastasia Fowle, who has assisted the body in recent years.

“After several years working alongside Alex, Sebastian and Romain, I am proud they and their fellow drivers have nominated me for the first non-F1 driver Board position,” Fowle said.

“I am passionate about the sport and the industry and am honoured to be able to support the GPDA in its endeavours.”

The GDPA thanked Grosjean for his “commitment and dedication” over the last number of years, while also wishing him “a fantastic and successful time in IndyCar.”
