Russell: Important to adopt ‘dynamic approach’

George Russell (GBR) Williams Racing. Formula One Testing, Sunday 14th March 2021. Sakhir, Bahrain.

George Russell says he has applied lessons learned during his Mercedes outing for 2021 but stressed having a “dynamic approach” is important in Formula 1.

Russell has spent the majority of his Formula 1 career with Williams towards the rear of the pack amid the team’s ongoing struggle for performance.

But Russell enjoyed one front-running display when he subbed for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in Bahrain last December.

Russell says he has been able to “merge together” ideas in order to try and extract the most out of himself and Williams heading into 2021.

“I think the Mercedes way is very analytical and very in depth into certain details of which I’ve been able to carry over in [terms of] how their engineers work,” said Russell.

“It is interesting and I can almost take a bit of both and almost merge them together to see what works best for myself.

“Equally, you know, minor details from what I learned with the data there and tried to implement a bit of that here, are all coming in handy.

“At the end of the day Formula 1 is very dynamic and you need to learn how to get the most out of your machine and if it works in a Mercedes, it doesn’t mean it works in a Williams.

“I think that is something I also learned is you have to be dynamic.

“I had to change my driving quite a lot to suit their car to get the most out of their car and equally when I came back to a Williams I had to revert because I couldn’t do things in a Williams I could do in a Mercedes.”
