The FIA has approved a new ‘spy-camera’ system to keep an eye on the teams under parc ferme conditions.
Under the current regulations, no work can be done on the cars between Saturday qualifying and the race on Sunday, unless the teams have prior FIA approval.
Pre-2010, the FIA kept all cars in a single garage to ensure the team’s didn’t go anywhere near them, but as the grid has expanded to 24 cars this year, the FIA has had to come up with a more efficient solution.
A successful trial of an ‘eye in the sky’ camera took place in Bahrain and has now been approved for use at the remainder of the races this season.
Each of the team’s garages will now have two camera’s, one above each car, to monitor any personal working in the vicinity of the car. The camera’s record a low-quality picture which is viewed by a security guard. If any movement is detected within the camera’s view, it automatically switches to a higher quality feed.
The security guard can then inform the FIA of suspicious activity.
