IndyCar has announced an inaugural race on America’s National Mall, backed by an Executive Order signed by President Donald Trump.

The championship has named the event the Freedom 250, and will be an additional 18th round to the 2026 championship.

Staging of the event will be helping America to mark the 250th year of its independence, and will be held across August 21-23.

The National Mall takes in some of the country’s most famous landmarks, including the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, taking in Capitol Hill and the White House, and thus will make a unique venue for an IndyCar event.

President Trump said: “For over one hundred years, American INDYCAR racing has set the pace for motorsports.

“With speeds topping over 200 miles per hour, the cars and drivers inspire awe and respect in all who watch this quintessentially American sport.”

IndyCar has stated that the race will be free to the general public, with further details about the specifics of the track to be announced in due course.

American motor racing legend Roger Penske lent his endorsement to the event, saying: “President Trump has bestowed an incredible distinction upon our sport, and we’re grateful for his trust and support as INDYCAR prepares to honor our country with a tremendous racing spectacle.

“This will be a truly memorable event that celebrates our country’s independence and the legacy of patriotism, innovation and excellence that powers motorsports across America.”
