Alpine hopes to ‘regularly fight’ for F1 podiums in 2021
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Alpine Formula 1 team says it hopes to be consistently challenging for podiums during the 2021 campaign.

The French squad, which ran under the Renault name from 2016 to 2020, took two podiums with Daniel Ricciardo last season, and one with Esteban Ocon.

Although the team has outlined its desire to become grand prix race winners, Alpine’s new Racing Director Davide Brivio affirmed it has to be “realistic”.

With two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso joining the marque for the 2021 season alongside Ocon, the team states it hopes to be knocking on door of the top three positions at grand prix weekends.

“Of course we want to win, everybody in the team wants to win,” Brivio said. “We have to be realistic.

“Last year we did three podiums, so we started to get close to the top positions and that’s where we have to start from.

“First of all, we have to be fighting for the podium, hopefully regularly fighting for the podium, and then step-by-step go close to the best possible position.

“Of course the final target is to win. Probably we have a route to get there and achieve this target, but that’s what we have to do.”

With new technical regulations being introduced in 2022 aimed at improving competitiveness and racing, all teams are currently placing primary focus on next year’s challengers.

Brivio says that Alpine is hopeful his team will be competitive this year, before taking another step forward at the commencement of F1’s new era in 2022.

“This year is kind of a special year because everybody is looking towards 2022, the new regulations and new cars which is under development,” Brivio said.

“So this is a kind of preparation year where we hope in 2022 to improve even more our competitiveness, but the winning is always in our target.

“I’m sure our drivers first, they want to get there. So yes that’s the target, because you need to get the target, you need to have a dream, and then you need to work very hard to achieve it.”
