Monaco circuit build work set to begin on Monday

Opinion: Pandemic gives F1 chance to rethink future calendars

Monaco’s government has given the green light for the Automobile Club de Monaco to begin construction work in the Principality in anticipation of this year’s trio of events.

The Monaco Grand Prix, as well as the preceding Historic event, was cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year’s Monaco Grand Prix is planned for May 23 and organisers moved last month to dispel speculation that the event was at risk once more due to the pandemic.

Formula 1 has not competed at a temporary street-based facility since the pandemic.

In order to make up for the 2020 cancellations the ACM has organised for both the Historic event and the originally planned Monaco E-Prix to take place before Formula 1’s visit.

The Historic event is set for April 25 with Formula E’s round scheduled for May 9.

Due to the earlier date for the Historic round construction of the temporary facility has been brought forward by two weeks and will commence on Monday.

This will include setting up the infrastructure necessary for the circuit, including dedicated access routes and public paths, as well as the removal of street furniture, in the Monte Carlo and La Condamine districts of the Principality.

Monaco is currently due to host the fifth round of the 2021 Formula 1 season.

The last time Formula 1 raced at a street circuit was in September 2019 in Singapore.

Last year’s cancellation marked the first time Monaco was absent from the calendar since 1954.

Monaco’s government has enforced Covid-19 prevention measures including the closure of all bars, limited opening hours for restaurants, as well as a night time curfew.

These regulations will be in place until at least March 19.
