AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly has become the sixth Formula 1 driver to test positive for Covid-19, with the Frenchman announcing his diagnosis through social media on Sunday night.

Gasly has begun a period of self-isolation but expressed that he is feeling ‘OK’.

In a message released on Sunday evening, Gasly said: “Hello everyone, I hope you’re all safe and well.

“I wanted to let you know that I tested positive for Covid-19. I’ve told everyone I’ve been in contact with during the last few days.

“I’m currently self-isolating and following the protocol set by the local health authorities.

“I’m feeling OK, and will continue to follow my training plan from my home while I remain in isolation. Take care.”

Sergio Perez was the first F1 driver to test positive for Covid-19 following the start of the 2020 season, before his team-mate Lance Stroll contracted the virus later in the year.

Seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton also returned a positive test result, which ruled him out of the Sakhir Grand Prix last December.

Following the conclusion of the season, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc announced they had tested positive for Covid-19, but both have since made a recovery.

Norris, Leclerc and Gasly all spent time in Dubai during the off-season, with AlphaTauri racer Gasly in the nation as part of a pre-season training camp.

Several other senior Formula 1 figures have caught Covid-19, including Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll, and Williams team boss Simon Roberts.
