Sir Frank Williams, co-founder of the Formula 1 team that bears his name, has been discharged from hospital, his family have confirmed.

It was revealed on December 15 that the 78-year-old had been admitted to hospital though no further information was provided.

On Thursday (December 24), his family confirmed in a short statement that he “is now on the mend at home” after being discharged from hospital.

“The Williams family would like to thank everyone for their support during this difficult time, and to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,” concluded the message.

Sir Frank spent over 50 years as a Formula 1 Team Principal, most prominently with the team he co-founded with Sir Patrick Head, which joined the championship in 1977.

Sir Frank scaled back his day-to-day involvement in the team in the early 2010s, with daughter Claire spearheading operations at grands prix, holding the role of deputy team boss.

The family sold the organisation to investment firm Dorilton Capital in August and relinquished involvement following the conclusion of September’s Italian Grand Prix.

Sir Frank’s most recent paddock appearance came at the 2019 British Grand Prix, at which he was taken on a hot lap in a Mercedes road car by World Champion Lewis Hamilton.

Williams has won 114 grands prix and 16 world titles (seven Drivers’, nine Constructors’) since its foundation.
