Juan Pablo Montoya will return to McLaren after a 15-year absence in order to tackle next year’s Indianapolis 500.

Montoya joined McLaren in Formula 1 in 2005, taking three of his seven grand prix wins for the team, but left mid-2006 to pursue a career in NASCAR.

Montoya returned to single-seater competition in 2014, joining Team Penske in IndyCar, and added a second Indianapolis 500 victory in 2015, having won the event on his debut with Ganassi in 2000.

The Colombian has not competed at the event since 2017, when he finished sixth, but in 2021 will pilot a third Arrow McLaren SP entry, alongside full-time drivers Felix Rosenqvist and Pato O’Ward.

“I’m delighted for Juan to rejoin the McLaren family and return to the Indianapolis 500 with Arrow McLaren SP,” said McLaren CEO Zak Brown.

“He is an intensely competitive, highly versatile driver, with deep experience at the top level of motorsport and a big following.

“Having him with us at the 500 next year will be great for the team and IndyCar fans everywhere.”

Montoya, 45, has competed for Penske in IMSA full-time since his IndyCar exit and claimed the title in 2019.
