Haas’ Romain Grosjean did not suffer any major injuries as a result of his heavy crash on the opening lap of the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday, but will stay overnight in the hospital.

Grosjean was taken to hospital after he climbed out of his destroyed VF-20 car, which had split in two and erupted into flames at the Turn 3 exit of the Bahrain International Circuit.

The Frenchman hit the Armco barrier at 221 km/h (137 mph), with the impact itself registering over 50G.

X-rays from the hospital show that he sustained zero fractures in the accident, however he will remain in the facility overnight to be treated for burns on the back of his hands.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after the race, Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner says Grosjean is “upbeat” after the incident.

“I just spoke with him, I talked to him on the phone,” Steiner said. “He’s in a clear state of mind, he’s good.

“He’s staying in the hospital overnight, they want to keep him there but he told me he feels good, it seems nothing is broken.

“He’s got his hands bandaged from the burns but otherwise, he has no burns [elsewhere] or nothing. He was very upbeat, I would say.

“It was hard, but what I tried to do was immediately give them [the team] the good news that everything is fine, just inform them of what was happening.

“They were all shocked. As soon as we knew he was OK, I went on the radio to the whole team: ‘Guys, just calm down, Romain is out of the car, he is good’.”

Steiner added that Grosjean’s physio was quick to get in touch with wife Marion, to inform her that her husband had no serious or life-threatening injuries.

“His physio was in contact with his wife straight away, they know each other very well,” Steiner said.

“They gave her the news. When I called him before, he was on the phone with his son, which is good, but I think it’s all under control.”
